80s Native Sunset Brass Concho Belt Small
I absolutely had to have this belt when I first saw it, back somewhere around 1982 or '83.
I had walked into an Indian jewelry shop in Old Town, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. At that time I was done to death with silver and turquoise but when I spied this pretty, I said, "Mine!"
I do not remember the name of the shop nor do I know who the native artist is who designed it. It is signed "MSP" at the buckle.
Comprised of 10 oval brass discs or conchos, each cast with a geometric Native American design, simply done. The discs are clamped onto a thin, black suede belt. This started out as a belt, with a longer suede strap; at some point I decided I wanted a cool hatband for my cowgirl hat, so I cut the suede to fit the hat.
It's beautiful, probably one-of-a-kind.
Condition:
Very Good. I haven't ever polished the conchos, 'cause I like the tarnished brass look, you may feel differently. Light scratching on all of the conchos; I feel this detracts very little if at all because it just adds to its charming, rustic look. As stated above, the suede belt was cut; if need be, fairly easily replaced. There is still one hole in the belt and room for a couple more if needed.
Measurements:
The conchos are 1.75 inches/4.4 cm wide and a wee bit shy of 1.25 inches/3.2 cm tall.
The suede belt is 25 inches/53.5 cm long and can accommodate up to a 25 inch waist, if another hole is punched in the leather.
